Critical Funding for CHEP’s Veteran Housing Program renewed
Three-year award sustains housing and support for up to 64 Veterans each night in MD and SC
HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., September 17, 2026: Chesapeake Health Education Program, Inc. (CHEP) has secured continued funding through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Grant and Per Diem program, protecting the future of its work with Veterans experiencing homelessness.
The renewed funding allows CHEP to continue operating its Veteran housing programs at Perry Point, Maryland, and in North Charleston, South Carolina. Together, these programs can provide housing for up to 64 Veterans each night. CHEP operates nine homes for 29 Veterans at Perry Point and a 35-bed program at its North Charleston property.
“We know how competitive this funding is, and we do not take the VA’s continued confidence in CHEP for granted,” said Jennifer Travers, Chief Operating Officer at CHEP. “We are incredibly grateful for this award and what it makes possible. It gives us three more years to keep helping Veterans move forward.”
Along with housing, CHEP’s GPD programs connect Veterans with health care, benefits, employment assistance, and other resources. Staff work with each Veteran to address the barriers that may have made it difficult to find or keep stable housing.
“The next step is different for every Veteran,” Travers said. “What matters is that they do not have to figure it out alone. Our staff stay with them through the hard parts and celebrate with them when they are ready to move into a home of their own.”
The funding is part of $318 million in GPD awards announced by the VA on September 14. The three-year grants begin October 1, 2026, and support transitional housing and related services for Veterans experiencing homelessness.

Grant Improves Veteran Housing in South Carolina
CHEP has received a grant from the Dominion Energy Foundation to make important improvements to its veteran housing program in North Charleston. The project will repair the parking lot and replace a deteriorating privacy fence, making the property safer, more accessible, and more comfortable for the veterans who call it home during their journey toward independence.
CHEP Awarded $5,000 Grant to Improve the Outpost
CHEP has been awarded a $5,000 grant through the VLT Local Community Impact Grant Program to install a cooling system at the CHEP Outpost. The shopping floor and volunteer warehouse currently have no air conditioning, making summer temperatures challenging for shoppers, volunteers, and staff. This investment will create a more comfortable environment, improve the shopping experience, support volunteer recruitment and retention, and help protect donated merchandise as the Outpost continues to grow and serve the Cecil County community.
VLT Grants Invest in Housing & Education
CHEP has been awarded two $5,000 grants through the VLT Local Community Impact Grant Program to strengthen two core areas of its mission. One grant supports housing services for veterans experiencing homelessness, while the other helps expand continuing education opportunities for healthcare professionals, counselors, first responders, and other community providers. Together, these investments help strengthen both the support available to veterans and the network of professionals who serve our community.
